Houston Community Newspapers Online - The Citizen Bay Area - 02/02/2006 - Czech ambassador pays visit to 'Texas Czech Lands' After presenting his credentials to President George W. Bush, Czech Republic's new ambassador to the United States Petr Kolar's first order of business was to pay a visit to 'Texas Czech Lands.' Ambassador Kolar, who was named to his post in December, and his wife Jaroslava, made several stops in the state, which included Austin, Houston and points in between.Another region in the US where many Czechs have settled over the years, is the mid-West, particularly Chicago. Of course, the Czech diaspora is much smaller and less well known than the Polish one. However, it is not without its influence. It introduced the word 'kolatches' (from koláče) describing Czech pies and also the musical style Polka (dechovka in Czech) which despite the word is of Czech origin. People in Chicago might be aware that the famous former Mayor Anton Cermak (Čermák) was born in Czech Kladno. Here are some relevant links: ‹ previous • 387 of 530 • next ›
